The ViewManchester Review
Basic and busy, This and That is a brilliant little cafe in the Northern Quarter, where you can grab a cheap and tasty curry. The VenueThe cafe is tucked down a small back alley, just around the corner from Trof on Thomas Street. Don’t be put off by the slightly dubious entrance, it is simple and basic but always clean inside. Seating comes in the form of plastic cafeteria style tables and chairs with a row of stools around the periphery.
The AtmosphereThe cafe attracts all sorts of people - from business types in suits, builders in overalls to creative types working in the area. It’s a real mixed bag. The clientele tend to scoff their curry and go - it’s not a place people tend to hangout for very long. It has a lively atmosphere at lunchtimes, as it can get very busy, but no matter how rushed they are the staff are always welcoming and friendly.
The FoodThere are no menus on tables and no waiting staff to take your order. Just join the queue at the counter and ask for rice and three and pick three curries from the days selection. The dishes change everyday and there is always a good variety of chicken, lamb and veggie curries. The staff are generous with the portions and once plated up you can sprinkle on chillis and fresh coriander to suit your particular taste. For a meat combo you’ll pay just £4.70 and for a veggie plate £3.20. You can pay extra for naan bread and onion bhajis, if you feel mega hungry.
The DrinkTo drink, you can grab a jug of tap water and some glasses on the counter or, if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, try one of their mango lassi’s.
The Last WordThis and That is a hidden gem in the Northern Quarter. A no-frills, no-nonsense cafe where you can get one of the best curries in Manchester.
