The ViewManchester Review
Boasting just about the best view in London from which to enjoy a drink, supper, breakfast or lunch, Oxo is owned by Harvey Nichols and sits at the top of the iconic tower presiding over the Southbank. The VenueDivided into two spaces – a brasserie and a fine dining restaurant, each with a bar – the look is subdued and grown up. The low lighting, white tablecloths and black walls create a monochrome look that works beautifully when set against the riverside cityscape.
The AtmosphereService at the Oxo Tower is attentive and slick. The atmosphere is relaxed – almost serene – and the chatter of diners is calm and measured. Perhaps it’s the relaxing river views or the muted surroundings that cause the chilled out vibe, but either way, it’s a good place to go if you want to have a quiet meal and chat with friends.
The FoodThe food offered in the fine dining room is up-to-the-minute in terms of ingredients and culinary trends: modern European with well thought out dishes. Erring on the high side price wise – mains average £20 – the cooking doesn’t always live up to the promise of the rest of the operation: the scallops can be tough, the accompanying risotto sickly and unmemorable, while the Turbot can be delicate but bland.
The DrinkThe best element of the menu is the own brand house champagne: floral, delicate and light with a bouquet and fizz to easily outdo any of its same-price competitors. Whether in the restaurant or just sitting at the bar, there is also a large array of cocktails to choose from, expertly prepared by the barstaff. If you want something more low key then there’s a fully-stocked bar with wine, beer and spirits – all reasonably priced considering the venue.
The Last WordAlthough the food can disappoint, a visit to the Oxo Tower still comes highly recommended. After all, quality isn’t scarce in London. Great locations with good ambiences are.
