The ViewManchester Review
An Australian bar in Chorlton which serves pies and proper beer? Can’t be bad, cobber.
The Venue
Uluru is an Australian bar and is the aboriginal name for the country’s natural landmark, Ayres Rock. There’s a small patio outside with a flower border. Inside the bar has a dark wood floor and orange walls. There’s a sofa in the window area and stools around the bar.
In the back area there are two chunky tables and a big mirror with flashing lights around it, as well as Aboriginal artefacts. Further back still there’s a completely wood panelled area with exposed brickwork and big plant pots. There are screens for live sport (hey this is an Aussie bar) and there’s live entertainment every weekend and live music on Thursdays, as well as a quiz night on Wednesdays.
The People
Uluru mainly attracts a crowd in their 20s and 30s, including local Aussies, South Africans and Brits who’ve travelled a bit. When there’s live music on it gets quite buzzy and the live sport always pulls a crowd, sometimes noisy but thoroughly well behaved. It’s open till 1am on a Friday and Saturday when it gets pretty busy.
The Food and Drink
There’s a wide and interesting selection of beers, including Guinness, Unicorn, John Smith’s, Kronenbourg, San Miguel and Foster’s on tap and in bottles there’s Stein (£2.80), Hahn, Toohey’s, Victoria Bitter (£2.60), Carlton Gold, Crown, Kiwi lager Speight’s Gold Medal Ale and the fresh and crisp Cooper’s Original Pale Ale.
On the wine front there’s Eagles Point Colombard Chardonnay at £2.55/£3.55 for a small/large glass or just £9.95 a bottle. Shooters are £2.50 each and cocktails are £3.95 each. Hungry? They do Jumbuck’s Pies too, which come in both savoury (chunky steak) and sweet (apple, cinammon and custard) versions.
The Last Word
A friendly joint, Uluru’s is a good place to hang out and eat their tasty pies while diligently working your way through the exotic beer collection.
