The ViewManchester Review
The Waterhouse is a reasonably priced pub in a rather posh setting.
The Venue
Opened in 2002, The Waterhouse takes its name from Alfred Waterhouse who designed the Town Hall, back in 1877. There are entrances on both Princess Street and Kennedy Street and it’s (yes another) Wetherspoons pub, but doesn’t have that Wetherspoons trademark of a gigantic, one-room bar.
In fact inside it’s almost like the bar of some grand hotel - there are four separate rooms off the main bar, which are all very plush, sedate and comfortable. There are modern sculptures and paintings in the rooms, which are tastefully done out in velvets, wooden floors, comfy armchairs and decent carpets. Even the loos are quite posh. The main bar area is a little more workman-like but, all in all, it offers very pleasant surroundings.
The People
The Waterhouse opens at 9am and does a brisk breakfast trade thanks to the builders across the road. The next rush hour is around one when the workers, both white collar and manual this time, are back. And there's another peak after work. In between times there are shoppers resting their legs in the big armchairs.
The Food and Drink
With prices like a pint of Green King for just £1.59, it's definitely one of the cheapest places to drink around here and that explains why it’s so popular. Otherwise there’s Boddington’s, Carling, Stella and Foster’s on draught, and Peroni, Budweiser, Lech and Corona in bottles. The coffee is Italy’s most popular brew, Lavazza, and they serve up a good breakfast, as well as sandwiches, snacks and main meals.
The Last Word
Value-for-money and plush surroundings make The Watermark a better than average pub.
