The ViewManchester Review
A small and pleasant space, Abode is home to music-loving drinkers.
The Venue
Snugly fit into a small row of bars, including The Bar and Nook, on Wilbraham Road, Chorlton, Abode doesn’t necessarily stand out at first appearance. A covered wooden terrace for outdoor drinking and smokers is the first thing that greets you before entering. If the sun shines (not that often to be fair), Abode is a cracking late afternoon spot to enjoy a few beers.
Inside, there are bare floorboards and rickety wooden furniture lit by deep red lamps. Abode is great for sitting around with friends, but for those who enjoy a good recline, the sofas and armchair may be preferable. You’ll have to be quick to grab one, though, they’re in high demand. Slightly tacky pop art images of music icons like Morrissey, Ian Curtis and Debbie Harry don’t particularly add much to the decor but clumsily indicate that Abode likes music.
Abode has a relaxed atmosphere that makes it hard to leave after a few, especially with an eclectic range of music playing constantly at a level that isn’t a hindrance to conversation. Abode also benefits from having very friendly staff.
The People
A mix of young graduates, locals and the work-shy frequent Abode over the course of the day and night. Most of the people here will appreciate music of sort, whether it’s soul, indie, weird pop or electronic music. The eclectic range of music they put on attracts a wide range of punters during the various live sets and band nights. Currently there’s an acoustic night called Hemp on Thursdays, while Fridays is called Sounds of the Suburbs and Saturdays are entitled The Canteen.
The Drink
A good selection of draft lager, cider and cask ale are on offer, including Lowenbrau at £2.95 a pint, Peroni (£3.25) and Fosters and Strongbow (£2.25 between 11am-6pm). Ales include Hydes, Thwaites Wainwright and Lancaster Bomber (all £2.25 between 11am-6pm). Also on tap are San Miguel and Budvar. There’s also bottled cider for £2.50 (Magners, Bulmers, Westons Organic) and there’s also selected spirits and a mixer (a small but sufficient range) for £2.15.
The Last Word
This is a friendly little bar in the heart of Chorlton. In the face of stiff local competition, Abode is a bar that can hold its own, even if some of its neighbours have upped their game of late.
