Manchester Museum
To mark the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth there are a series of nationwide events and exhibitions to celebrate one of the most important and influential thinkers of all-time. One of the exhibitions is entitled Darwin: the evolution of a scientist and it takes place as part of the Manchester Museum’s roster of Darwin events. Manchester Museum is a building with many connections to the pioneering work of Darwin. It was originally opened after advice from Thomas Huxley, a scientist also known as Darwin’s bulldog, and the building was designed by Alfred Waterhouse who also designed the National History Museum in London, which is now home to the Darwin Centre.
Natural Selection
Whilst it is easy to take Darwin’s theories on natural selection and evolution for granted these days, you shouldn’t forget that at the time he published his work he encountered stiff resistance from the church and much of society as a whole. His scientific work challenged the established world order and to see the story behind the man you should head to one of the Darwin events. Manchester Museum will be installing a permanent exhibition which has been specially designed for younger visitors to interact and enjoy.
Brought To Life
One of the key parts of the Manchester Museum series of events is the Charles Darwin: Evolution Of A Scientist graphic exhibition. This blends intricate illustrations from Chrissie Morgan with actual objects collected by the great man himself.
Photographic Evidence
Photographer Ben Hall journeyed across South America in the footsteps of Charles Darwin and the landscapes and wildlife that he captured on film are being exhibited as part of the Darwin events. Manchester wildlife lovers will more than likely be familiar with the award-winning photography of Hall and, if you’ve not had the opportunity to see it, you should definitely head down and see some of his startling work.
Keep It In The Family
Manchester Literature Festival are contributing to the Darwin Events. Manchester Museum is hosting an evening with Charles Darwin’s great-great-granddaughter, Ruth Padel. Author of a new collection of poetry that is dedicated to the life of her illustrious relative, Padel will be reading excerpts from the tome. The event takes place 7.30pm, Thursday 15th October 2009. Tickets cost £7.
The exhibitions and activities take place Saturday 3rd October 2009-July 2010 as part of the 200th bi-centennial Darwin events. Manchester Museum is hosting the free to attend celebrations, with the exception of the Ruth Padel event which costs £7. For more information, click on the link below.
