The ViewManchester Review
Dubbed Manchester's number one indie experience, 5th Avenue has been playing host to the scenesters of Manchester since the early 1990s. Crowded, classic and cheap, it’s a big hit with students nearly every night of the week. The VenueFifth, as it is dubbed by locals, is situated on Princess Street, close to Oxford Road. Previously used as an air raid shelter during the Second World War this historic venue has seen many a student obliterated and in need of rescue after a good night out.
Once you’ve entered the club you go down a set of stairs where you're faced with a big dancefloor and two bars all located at the bottom of the venue. Look up and you’ll see plenty of students gazing down from the upstairs level of the club where you’ll find another bar and a chill out area that's far from calm. Open Monday to Saturday, 5th Avenue is always pretty cheap entry wise but take note: the earlier you arrive the cheaper your night will be as long as you don't spend the extra time drinking the bar dry. The club usually has a small fee before 10.30pm or 11pm and then the prices go up considerably on selected nights but if you happen to have a flyer, NUS or UMIST Card then you can usually get in for a bit cheaper after 10.30pm or 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
The AtmosphereFifth has multiple personalities due mainly to the variety of music it plays. Student clubbers range from scruffy rockers to dolled up retro indie chicks. Anything goes in this club; whether you’re a thirty-year-old ex-student trying to relive your youth, or a dressed up to the nines Justin Timberlake fan who’s been dragged along by your mates - nobody looks or feels out of place.
The MusicIf you want a fun and cheesey Manchester night out then this is the place. Playing top Manchester bands like the Stone Roses, New Order and Oasis, this club attempts to recapture the lost days of the city's famous Hacienda. However, make sure you check what music they'll be playing in advance as it ranges from indie, alternative and rock to dance and pop.
The DrinkDrinks are pretty cheap which is what you'd expect considering the student clubbers who pack the place out and there is always a range of deals to choose from depending on which night you go. The club also gives priority to safety on a shoestring which is fantastic for students with its own Drop Off Home Bus service five nights a week for only a pound.
The Last WordClassic, cheap and crowded are definitely the three best words to use when describing 5th Avenue. If you're looking for a classic Manchester student night out then this is the best place to go to hear chart tracks for a cheap price. One piece of advice: get there early unless you want to be queuing outside for hours.
